3D6 Down the Line plays Dolmenwood

Making a post to recommend the patron-only Actual Play Dolmenwood campaign run by Jon Britton 3D6 Down the line called Return To Dolmenwood.

The show is available both as a podcast but also on YouTube with professional looking visuals.

The team has a number of campaigns (Arden Vul, Dolmenwood in the Old-school essential style, Mothership and more).

Besides being thoroughly entertaining to watch, the main reason I would recommend it is Jon’s skills as a Referee/DM/GM. His play-style is very much what I aim to achieve when I run games myself.

Our family had a great time this weekend making characters and starting to explore Droomen Knoll. Five out of six participated (the baby is still too young). We hope to make this a weekly tradition!

Hello, this page is run by Christopher Käck. This is my designated space to talk about tabletop roleplaying games and other hobbies.

I publish some folk dnd zines and adventures that are available on itch.io (where my games have been downloaded 4000 times!) and DriveThruRPG in both print and digital editions. Primarily for Old-school Essentials and Mausritter.

I have have been playing various ttrpgs since I was a young boy and I am currently deep in DMing a long running (multiple years) OSR campaign. I enjoy sharing my hobby with my three boys as well as new and old friends.

Visited Öland this weekend for a wedding and it so happened to be located within the Skedemosse hex in When Winter Came To Skedemosse.

Here are some photos I snapped at Skedemosse Museum that can be used as loot inspiration for your adventure. Some of these objects are already mentioned in the adventure!

Here is the ring fort Ismanstorps borg. I believe this ring fort to be slightly smaller than Sörby borg featured in the adventure, but it serves to give you a scale of size of these places.

Lord Matteus just put out a charming review of When winter came to Skedemosse.

All in all, I think this is a really good module. Its layout will make it easy to run with little prep. It provides additional background information for campaigns inspired by Scandinavian Viking culture. I’m looking forward to incorporating it into my upcoming Mystara: The Northern Reaches campaign.

Edit on Mars 5: Got some good feedback after this video. My favorite is: Use monster listen checks, when a normal classed character (or a thief that fail their move silently roll) move the monsters get a listen check. If a thief succeed with their move silently check i.e move silently then do not allow a roll.

I will be implementing this in my home game.

Folk DnD.

Folk: as in folk art.

DnD: as in the popular game that became synonymous with tabletop roleplaying.

I really like this expression that I picked up from Questing Beast. You can see the man himself explain it in the video below.

It expresses the joy of the game that has long since diverged from any one brand, rule system or otherwise. It underlines that what is important is how it is played at home around the thousand kitchen tables, discord servers and basements where it is played. Not what some public megacorp thinks you should buy or play!

The culture and memories that are created there. Those homebrew rules blooming out of years and years of gaming experience and the joy of experimentation. The unprofessional folk art created by friends for their own sake documenting some epic event, or commemorating a fallen comrade. Art created just for a few people who were there, not intended for wider audience, for profit or anything else. Art created for five friends. Just for the utterly human urge to create art. It is about those retold stories of the grand battles, taking risk and having a merry old time.

I can still recall battles of old we fought as kids more than twenty years ago in a boy’s room somewhere in southern Sweden. Remembering the comradery, the bravery and the excitement. I still play with some of the people I did back then. Boys then, men now.

Pour a libation to your fallen player characters and to Folk DnD.

Magic item in Dolmenwood: The bag of bleats

Appearance: A bagpipe made from the torso of a long-horn goatman noble. Dark grey fur covers it with the head and horns prominently displayed on the back of the instrument.

The eyes sometimes open staring pleadingly at anyone near by
Mushrooms grow in the fur
Makes horrible bleating sounds when played (eeirly similar to a cry for help in Gaffe)
Smells like old cheese and it gets even worse when it is played

Effects:

Goatmen must make morale check or flee
Proficient players (such as a bard or minstrel) can with a 1-in-6 play a horrid note that breaks glass within 30’ radius

White Box for our little free library

Our community have several library boxes where people can trade books with each other.

Seeing that our old favorite White Box was so fairly priced we ordered a bunch of them and some dice sets to put out in our local boxes. Hopefully it allow someone to discover the joy of tabletop roleplaying!

Short summary of each session in a Dolmenwood campaign I am running with my friends over Discord/FoundryVTT.

Mainly for the party to keep track of the main events and who played in what.

We run it drop-in/drop-out campaign letting people join as it fits their schedule.

We run Old-school Essentials (B/X) with these house-rules.

Cast:

Oswold Grumel (Fredrik) - Specialist (level 3) from High-Hankle. A talented man with sticky fingers.
Thegild Payne (Kent-Inge) - Hunter (level 2) from the east, beyond Castle Brackenwold. Owner of the dog Hund. Former soldier.
Wolfgar Guégan (Jonas) - Fighter (level 2) from the east, beyond Castle Branckenwold. Former soldier.
Brother Ruprecth Malodorus (Daniel) - Friar (level 2) in the Order of a Saint dedicated to chastity and dirt.
Euron the Magificent (Oliver) - Magic-user (level 2) and street performer from High-Hankle.

We have been wanting to try out the original dnd rules as presented by the White box. My son asked me if we could play something where he could play a dragon. So why not, I thought to myself, and picked up this light weight combo:

16mm wooden meeples (Meeples of might and menace)
Sturdy high quality paper and a pigma micron pen.
The White box rulebook
Some dice

And off we went to invade a Dwarf fortress full of undead monsters!

I just drew as he explored, giving his character the stats from one of the dragons in the game.

This seems to have gotten him inspired so when I finished work the other day he had prepared a dungeon crawl using (almost) the same set-up. Great way to end the day.

When I finished up work today my five year old son had prepped a Dungeon Crawl (~OD&D rules) he wanted to DM. Perfect ending to my day. pic.twitter.com/IRp750X8i0

Mausritter one-shot: Stumpville

The updated Mausritter rulebook comes with an adventure location called Stumpville.

I ran it as a one-off with some friends and here are some of my notes on how I packaged it into a three hour game.

The set-up

It’s the middle of winter, its icy cold but no snow has fallen yet.

Player characters are stranded in Oaksgrove when their caravan leaves without them. They were sleeping in after a night of heavy carousing on town. They are without money and need to earn some urgently if they want to avoid winding up on the street. But they’re in luck:

Agnes Butterball head of the merchant guild announces, standing on a barrel in the middle of the square, that the yearly Yule Cheese market is cancelled because the cheese has not showed up yet! She offers 500 pips to the one who can bring back the cheese to Oaksgrove (30 pip up front max). She suspects it has been caught up somewhere on the route from Stumpville.

Old School Essentials House Rules

I’ve written before concerning the house rules I use when I play with my son.

I am also running a Dolmenwood campaign right now and here are the house rules we run with.

The first one is inspired by the house rule I have when playing with my kid: Crits! (They’re fun) We will be using the crit and fumble tables from Dungeon Crawl Classics
(LotFP inspired) Knocked out on 0 HP. Death on -3 in 1d10 rounds no saves. Death instantaneous on -4.
Acending Armour Class.
(LotFP inspired) Heal 1 HP for nights rest, 1d3 for days rest.
Shields Shall be Splintered - sacrifice a shield to block all damage from one single hit.
Buy back dead characters XP (for the players new one) if they spend 1 GP per XP on the funeral.
The Specialist Class from Lamentations of the Flame Princess (instead of the OSE thief and skills)
Wrestling from Ten Foot Polemic’s House Rule Document.
Spell failure from B/X Options.

Happy to see that people have been enjoying Thistle Kingdom zine!

The Order of the Green Mice gets mentioned in Berpyle, another Mausritter zine by ManaRampMatt.

I recommend checking out the zine (the alternative character sheets are very nice).

Further he put up a mouse from the Order as an entry to the Mausritter Monday art competition.

Crafting Mausritter tokens

Mausritter seem to inspire a lot of crafts. These tokens we drew for our characters.

Hand drawn mice (color copied and printed) on white paper, we wrapped them around cardboard and then used some plastic stand from a board game we own.

Been on the lookout for some good models, if you know of any let me know

Barrow's Green - location for an OSR adventure

Barrow’s Green is a massive stretch of of green hilly plains north of the Gray Lake. On these plains a small outpost is located that goes by the same name, the Barrow’s Green Outpost. The plains are named after the many ancient barrows that cover the landscape.

It’s a very rural area with small population of farmers, hunters and homesteaders.

It stands under the protection of the noble house Oldwode and they, lead by the young Baron Nicholai, operate the keep and marketplace in Barrow’s Green Outpost.

Quickly sharing how I sketch out a short OSR adventure (Old School Essentials).

It’s a simple streamlined affair that I ran with my son. About a sentient Giant Toad king who is trying to establish dominance over a local lake and thereby disrupting the fish trade.

Old School Essentials House Rules when playing with kids

Been running two adventures this far with my young son (almost five years old) with the Old School Essentials rule system. It’s a modern layout of the old B/X rules.

Its been working great this far and we have played both Winters Daughter and the one-pager Please go to sleep, Arthur Cobbleworth.

We added some minor house rules to make things extra fun:

Crits: On a natural 20 on an attack dice we double the damage roll (we thoroughly enjoy the mini celebration every time you get that sweet 20 on the dice)
0 HP: When a character reaches 0HP we do not instantly kill him. Rather he passes out and we make him permanently injured by loss of an attribute point.

I will add to this list as we discover more things we’d like to tweak.

“Did you ‘take care’ of the demon possessed parrot?” - “no, we killed him”. Today we played the one page adventure “Please go to sleep, Arthur Cobbelworth”. As per usual my son solves everything with brutal honesty towards every NPC.
